Not a regular club

By: Nora Ruíz (Guest Voice)

Leadership is about changing another person´s life; influence him to make changes without forcing him. The idea of this club is to help the students to have the right skills to change their own life, so then they would be able to change others. The approach used in the course has five practices that start with individual growth so it can extend; these practices are developed in Exemplary Leadership.

My experience receiving the course was interesting, I learned lots of things about myself and also how to deal with the responsibility of leadership. As Junior Facilitator, I have to develop all the skills learned, polish them and  be able to express them and most important, live them.  This club is really important for the students, the school and every environment where we practice them, so we can thrive in each one.

Learning and applying the skills to be a positive leader are the essential points of this course, the five practices we develop are: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, enable others to act, challenge the process and encourage the heart which are thought and developed in class.

The course improved my way to act, my vision and even my English level and I don´t think that this learning will ever be forgotten. The opportunity IGA gave me by including me in this course represents a lot and it facilitates me to be better in many different ways and I am so thankful because of that.

Now I am practicing this knowledge as a Junior Facilitator in the leadership group developed with the students of 4o. Bachillerato. Junior Facilitators are the ones who graduated from the course last year and were selected to continue spreading the practices.

Being with my teammates is really nice because I learn from each one, they are admirable. The classes are taught by us and we get to practice the skills we teach, the club is interactive and we share about experiences on leadership and we support each other. The club is given by teenagers and received by them, so the chance of growth is for both sides.

These five steps may seem easy, but practicing them (which is more complicated) is our goal. The skills are necessary for leadership and in the club they are taken and analyzed from the book “The five practices of Exemplary Leadership” which I had the pleasure to read while taking the course.  The practices are fundamental, but the actions are what we are interested in developing.

Receiving the course represented a big growth for me; it helped me see myself in a different way and to give my actions the importance they have. The course was high-quality way because I was able to read the inspiring book called “The five practices of exemplary leadership” by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, and also the classes given by teacher Pablo Rosales, who had the opportunity to receive the course in Texas.

The club gives us the knowledge to develop and it is really important for us, because we have the chance to be better in our environment, but also influence others to be better.

I feel grateful that I had the chance to participate in leadership as student and as  Junior Facilitator, because it has taught me where to start and how to develop my plans, and if others have the same goal, we can support each other so we can achieve it and make extraordinary things happen.
